Presentation by Rohde, Bolgiano on emerging trends in semantic data and engineered systems

RESTON, VA, March 29, 2013 –  Two members of the Unissant senior management team presented on advances in technology that will help banks organize and evaluate larger amounts of detailed data, get smarter about their analytics, and look at new types and sources of data to fully maximize their investments today.

Will Rohde and Mark Bolgiano were invited by the  Professional Risk Managers International Association (PRMIA) to present on a panel titled “Unlocking Technology to Address Big Data Challenges in Banking” hosted by the SAS Institute in Rockville, MD.

Will Rohde, Unissant’s Chief Solutions Officer, drew on his experience inside financial services firms and as a consultant to provide an overview of the high-performance data systems landscape, including an in-depth look at engineered systems and the emergence of in-memory data analytics.  “We’re beginning to use private clouds and virtualization in ways that go beyond making system capacity more elastic while controlling cost”, said Rohde in his presentation, “while those benefits can be huge, we’re now talking about acquiring and analyzing data at a scale and speed that was unimaginable only a few years ago”.

Mark Bolgiano, who joined Unissant in January 2013 as Executive Vice President, Enterprise Programs, went to the whiteboard to brief attendees on how semantic web technologies enhance transaction and reference data that have become too complex for traditional database structures, or schema.

One of the most interesting areas likely to be affected by an increase in data about relationships between entities like companies, products and transactions, as opposed to information about the attributes themselves, is risk related to regulation and compliance, said Bolgiano.

“This enables us to capture increasingly complex networks in a changing operating environment without constantly re-engineering the database.  It represents a profound change in the world of risk management” said Bolgiano to attendees, “it is helping us overcome the toughest limiting factors we currently face when mining data to assess risk: identity, security, confidentiality, and the provenance, or chain of custody, of the data”.

Unissant is a professional services, data architecture and systems engineering firm providing advanced information management solutions to government, commercial, and non-profit clients.  It is a Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Level 3 compliant SBA 8a Small Disadvantaged Business (SDB).
